Night out at Devour

On Tuesday Erin told me she was off to dinner at Devour. Her friends had rented out the place for the night! I was pretty jealous and begged her to take some pictures for the blog... so... without further ado I am pleased to introduce you to Erin's night out at Devour...

The reason: Evan S., long time Devour patron and local foodie, is moving to St. Catherine’s, Ontario, to study viticulture for a year.

The setting: Devour after hours on a warm Tuesday evening.

The atmosphere: All 15 guests were dressed for the occasion with ladies in skirts and dresses, and the guys in khakis and denim with collared shirts. Though there was at one pair of hot pink flip flops (sported by one of the gentlemen actually). The music was heavy on the oldies classics, with dinner guests occasionally chiming in to sing the choruses along with the Temptations, Petula Clark and others, bringing back memories of childhood road-trips. Conversation flowed around the table as did the wine and beer.

The food: In a word - delicious

The evening started with a round of villa Teresa Prosecco for a toast and then we moved on to the first course.

Tomato + watermelon gazpacho with fresh mint – refreshing with a little bit of zip to it.

There was choice when it came to the main course:

Chicken Saltimbocca with green beans with potato and yam dauphinoise and baby chanterelle mushrooms – amazing, didn’t know chicken could just fall off the bone like that.

Or

Beef tenderloin and blackberries with potato and yam dauphinoise and baby chanterelle mushrooms – this was the more popular choice and it disappeared quickly from everyone’s plates. The potato and yam side was possibly the most commented on part of this course – I have to learn how to make it.

Bread pudding with brandied caramel peaches and peach ice cream – there are no words to describe that plate.

Some people ended the meal with a cheese plate featuring Saltspring Island chevre and an amazing parmesiano reggiano and ice wine. Such a classy end to a lovely evening.
